Alexa Tapia
Biography
Alexa Tapia joined NELP as the unemployment insurance campaign coordinator in 2020. Through a racial equity lens, she supports NELP’s efforts to advance significant unemployment insurance reform.
Her background includes a variety of legislative and organizing work, where she centered and uplifted workers and marginalized communities. She most recently joined NELP from the Kansas Department of Labor (KDOL), where she served as the special assistant to the Secretary at KDOL. In this role, she spearheaded the agency’s COVID-19 rapid response, providing critical and urgent resources and support to underpaid, mostly workers of color. While there, she also established a labor trafficking initiative and was a member of the Kansas Human Trafficking Advisory Board and the Governor’s Grant Implementation Plan Committee. Before serving as the special assistant to the Secretary at KDOL, she served as the legislative director for the Kansas House Minority Leader.
Alexa Tapia is a proud member of the NELP Staff Association, NOLSW, UAW, LOCAL 2320.
