Following is a statement from Christine Owens, Executive Director, National Employment Law Project:
“Vice President Biden often said that his father had an expression: ‘Don’t tell me what you value. Show me your budget, and I’ll tell you what you value.’ With the release of President Trump’s proposed budget today, we have a clear picture of what he and his administration value.
“In order to pay for reckless tax cuts that overwhelmingly favor the wealthy and corporate interests, and in order to scapegoat, terrorize, and deport immigrant workers and families, who are integral and valued members of our communities and our nation, the administration proposes to slash and burn programs throughout the government that try to level the playing field and help individuals and families who struggle to get by on low wages and non-existent benefits.
“America is a nation of unparalleled wealth and resources. We do not need to choose between rational and humane immigration policies, fostering economic growth and well-being, and helping those who struggle in our economy.
“We should reject these false choices that are presented to us under some supposed notion of making American ‘great again,’ and realize that our greatness can only be based on our commitment to creating a nation in which no one gets left behind, and all people are treated with dignity and respect.”
