The following is a statement from Rebecca Dixon, executive director of the National Employment Law Project, on the Uvalde, Texas school shooting:
“We are devastated by yesterday’s horrific mass school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, where a young man shot and killed 19 children and two teachers and injured many others. We offer our condolences to the loved ones of those lost, and to all the families and communities affected by the trauma of this senseless tragedy.
“This is the second mass shooting in 10 days to take place in a working-class community of color, this time a predominantly Latinx community.
“Schoolchildren, teachers, and school workers have the right to a safe environment. We join in collective mourning and solidarity with all people who demand strong policies and action to prevent gun violence — a systemic public health issue that is taking an ever greater toll on workers, our families and communities, and the whole of society.
“NELP works to build a good-jobs economy, leading with abundance, inclusivity, and equity; this means safe workplaces and communities for every worker.”
