We at NELP extend our condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of John J. Sweeney, former president of the AFL-CIO.
President Sweeney’s many accomplishments advanced the rights of working people across the United States, whether they were in a union or not. He was guided by the deeply held belief that workers knew best what they needed.
He leaves behind a legacy that paved the way for large labor unions to be more inclusive of women, immigrants, and people of color—and to value broad base organizing. Indeed, John J. Sweeney spent his career making this world a better place for all workers.
