On the Passing of Richard McHugh, Former NELP Staff Attorney

Washington, DC—The following is a statement from Rebecca Dixon, president and CEO of the National Employment Law Project, on the passing of Rick McHugh:

“We are deeply saddened by the passing of Rick McHugh, who served as a NELP staff attorney from 2000 to 2018 and was a nationally recognized expert on unemployment insurance. Rick’s legal skill and policy leadership were instrumental in securing federal unemployment insurance extensions during and after the Great Recession and in improving state UI programs that protect millions of workers. A self-described “social insurance geek,” Rick combined rigorous analysis with deep scholarly understanding. He made connections between complex policy and workers’ everyday lives, produced influential research and technical assistance, and mentored colleagues across the movement.

We remember Rick as thoughtful, curious, and possessed of a sharp, warm sense of humor, whose work advanced justice for workers nationwide. We extend our heartfelt sympathies to Rick’s family as they honor his memory.
