Statement from NELP President and CEO Rebecca Dixon on the Appointment of Julie Su as New York City Deputy Mayor for Economic Justice
“Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani’s announcement of Julie Su as New York City’s first ever Deputy Mayor for Economic Justice is tremendous news for working New Yorkers. For decades Ms. Su has been a widely respected partner and tireless champion of underpaid and immigrant workers organizing for fair treatment and respect on the job. From her days winning justice for trafficked immigrant garment workers at the El Monte sweatshop to her pathbreaking service as President Biden’s Acting Secretary of Labor, Ms. Su has fought for and won long overdue worker protections and pioneered creative new strategies for promoting a good jobs economy. The creation of a Deputy Mayor for Economic Justice position led by someone of Ms. Su’s stature and abilities signals the crucial role that cities now play in protecting workers and in breaking through the gridlock that and special interests that too often derail efforts by Washington and the states to act and innovate. With Ms. Su at his side, Mayor-elect Mamdani will be positioned to lead the way in making cities places where working people can make a decent living and thrive.”
