Following is a statement from Christine Owens, Executive Director, National Employment Law Project:
“President Trump’s announcement this afternoon that he intends to deploy the National Guard to the Southern Border marks yet another effort by his administration to advance an anti-immigrant, xenophobic agenda built on fear-mongering and scapegoating, at the expense of facts and reason.
“The U.S. has long addressed the needs of asylum seekers at our borders, and President Trump should not be permitted to do away with long-standing laws and protections in order to replace them with authoritarian impulses.
“As history has shown time and again, our country and its workers have much more to gain by advancing the principles of diversity, dignity, and inclusion, along with enlightened application of law and process for all who live and work here or who seek to do so.”
