ITHACA, N.Y. — Local progressive advocates and elected officials are aiming to make it illegal for employers within the City of Ithaca to fire workers without citing a just reason.
At a rally on the Commons Sunday, Alderpersons Kayla Matos and Phoebe Brown, the Common Council’s two sitting members of the progressive Solidarity Slate, said they plan to introduce a so-called “just cause” bill: legislation that would end at-will employment in the city.
At-will employment allows an employer to fire a worker without naming a reason or providing a warning.

Matos and Brown have not yet publicly revealed draft legislation. Matos and DeFendini said the new law will be based on policy recommendations from the National Employment Law Project, a nonprofit labor and economic advocacy organization.
