On the Trump Administration’s Proposal to Limit Immigration Through the Public Charge Rule

Following is a statement from Christine Owens, Executive Director, National Employment Law Project:

“The Trump administration’s proposed changes to the public charge rule mark yet another effort by this administration to exclude immigrants and advance a racist, xenophobic agenda.

“If finalized, this regulation would deny admission to the U.S. or lawful permanent resident status to many more individuals, including children, simply because they have relied on certain health care, nutrition, and housing assistance programs designed to protect the marginalized in our society.

“Racism and intolerance should not guide our nation’s public policy. The Trump administration should not be permitted to eviscerate long-standing protections that individuals have rightly availed themselves of to secure their health and well-being while residing in the United States.

“This country has much more to gain by advancing the principles of diversity, dignity, and inclusion for all who live and work here or who seek to do so.”
