Supporting Workers Affected by Disasters

Tens of thousands of workers are displaced from employment by recent disasters, including those affected by Hurricane Florence in the Carolinas, the massive wildfires in California, and Hurricane Michael in Florida and Georgia.

These latest disasters come in the wake of 2017’s devastating hurricanes in Texas, Florida, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, where hundreds of thousands became unemployed due to Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria.

Help is available to many of these workers to keep them on their feet in the wake of such disasters.

Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA), also referred to as Disaster Relief and Emergency Assistance, is a federal program that provides temporary financial assistance to individuals unemployed as a result of a “major disaster” declared by the president.
