NELP Calls on Biden Administration to Stop Mass Deportation and Mistreatment of Haitian Asylum Seekers

Washington, D.C.—The following is a statement from Rebecca Dixon, executive director of the National Employment Law Project, in response to the Biden administration’s mass expulsion and inhumane treatment of Haitian migrants at the southern border:

“President Biden campaigned on a commitment to racial equity and restoring dignity for all people. The Biden administration has, instead, actively advanced an agenda of white supremacy at the Southern border. There is no way to reconcile the administration’s refusal to cease mass deportations of Haitians under Title 42 and border agents’ horrific intimidation of Black migrants in scenes on par with the worst racial intimidation in our nation’s history with a commitment to racial justice, equity, dignity, or even basic due process. The Biden administration has no excuse.

“Haitian migrants at the border have a right to seek refuge in this country with the full protection and process guaranteed under asylum and other laws. The Biden administration must acknowledge the harm it has done and immediately stop all deportations to Haiti, terminate Title 42, grant humanitarian parole to Haitians seeking protection, provide humanitarian assistance to migrants at the border, and hold its Border Patrol agents and leaders accountable. Anything less will continue to threaten this administration’s legitimacy and undermine its entire agenda, and members of Congress must make it clear that they will not support or enable another racist, anti-Black administration.”
