Legislative Reform

Federal
This section includes proposals for federal legislation aimed at strengthening the workplace rights of particular sectors of immigrant workers, such as day laborers.  It also provides resources for advocacy around issues involving the federal government, such as social security no-match letters the effects of the Supreme Court's decision in Hoffman Plastics, as well as language access to government benefits and services.

State
There are many ways in which states and localities can act to improve the situation of immigrant workers in the present climate, including: language access to government services and benefits; drivers' licenses; confidentiality laws and laws regulating police enforcement of immigration laws; immigrant workers' rights and remedies post Hoffman Plastic, and workers' compensation rights of immigrant workers.  This section addresses those actions, providing background, comparison of states’ laws, model legislation and talking points.

Policy Updates
NELP's Immigrant & Nonstandard Worker Project regularly issues Policy Updates on a monthly basis. The goal of the policy updates is to identify trends and advocacy issues affecting low-wage immigrant workers. Since our desire is to provide updates that are useful and informative to all of you, we welcome any suggestions for issues we should address in our upcoming pieces.
