NELP's New Federal Advocacy Coordinator Starts October 17th

NELP is pleased to announce the opening of a new Washington, DC office on October 17th and the hiring of Judy Conti as our new Federal Advocacy Coordinator.   Judy joins NELP after serving as the founding director of the D.C. Employment Justice Center, one of the nation's most respected worker centers that has advanced major legal and policy reforms on behalf of the District's diverse population of low-wage and immigrant workers.  Judy brings an exceptional substantive expertise to NELP's federal advocacy work, experience testifying before Congress, and a background in Hill advocacy based on her prior position with D.C. law firm of James and Hoffman representing several major labor unions.

Judy will be working with NELP staff to promote a federal agenda and raise the profile of new promising state and local initiatives that deliver on the nation's promise of economic opportunity.  NELP’s federal goals are to increase job quality, strengthen workplace rights and bolster economic security, as evidenced by current NELP priorities like the U.I. Modernization Act (S. 1871/H.R. 2233), the Independent Contractor Proper Classification Act (S. 2044) and other key issues like trade adjustment assistance reauthorization and immigrant worker rights.

According to the NELP's Interim Executive Director, Andrew Stettner, “NELP is elated to have found such a capable leader to coordinate our new federal advocacy agenda, especially someone so uniquely qualified to represent the interests and priorities of NELP's state and local network of employment advocates."  According to Joselph Kolick, the Board President of the D.C. Employment Justice Center, "Judy Conti moves on from the D.C. Employment Justice Center at a time of solid growth and enthusiasm for the future. Under Judy’s leadership, the D.C. Employment Justice Center has blossomed and tens of thousands of low-income workers have been served.” The DC EJC will now be led by Melvina Ford, who was promoted from her position as Deputy Director.

NELP extends a special thanks to the Joyce Foundation for its support and featuring NELP in a recent newsletter. To read more, Click here
